Intention

With New Years coming up, most people set some sort of resolution for the new year. Personally, I think every 1st of the month, every Monday even, is an opportunity for a new resolution, however I’m not really into resolutions.

I’ve set them in the past and I’ve actually never kept any of them for longer than a couple months. Last year, I did something else, I set an intention for the New Year.

Honestly, I didn’t quite understand what that meant until I started coaching at Orangetheory and I’d ask clients to set an intention of what they wanted there all out (or sprint) speed to be. When I tell them to set an intention, I want them to think about where they want to be and how they’re going to get there. For the first sprint, you go 85-90% effort and each one after should match or slightly beat the speed from the previous sprint. Your final sprit should be your max effort, every bit of energy of effort of strength you have, you leave all of that on the tread. Now, you might not get to the speed you ultimately want to be at, but you’re closer than you were before. If you take this approach for each class, soon you will meet your speed goal. It’s the intent that you will make it by having a plan that will get you from one place to another.

This can apply to real life too. It means formulating a plan on how to accomplish your end goal. It means visualizing where you want to be and the steps you’ll need to take to get you there. Even if you don’t get to your end goal, you’re much closer to it then you were when you started. We still have 3 days to come up with an intention or 2 and formulate a couple steps on how to start each one.
